Sometimes the intensity of a reaction doesn’t seem to match what’s happening in the moment.

A look, a tone of voice, a smell, a place — even a particular feeling — can stir something much older.

Trauma memories aren’t always experienced as clear memories. Sometimes they return as fear, shame, physical sensations or a powerful sense that something is wrong. Your mind may know you’re in the present, while your body is responding to something it recognises from the past.

Understanding this can create a little more space around the reaction.

This feeling is familiar.
This reaction makes sense.
But this moment is not that moment.

The past doesn’t have to disappear for it to begin to feel like the past.

Self-reliance can become such a familiar way of coping that asking for help feels uncomfortable, exposing or even unsafe.

When you’ve learnt that the safest person to depend on is yourself, “I’ll deal with it” can become an automatic response — even when part of you is tired of having to manage everything alone.

Sometimes strength isn’t about needing nobody. It’s about beginning to notice when you no longer have to do everything by yourself.
