Sometimes insight isn’t the missing piece.

We can understand exactly where a pattern came from and still find ourselves repeating it.

Because some things were learned through experience — and sometimes it takes new experiences to begin changing what we expect.

Not everything we learned to anticipate in the past is what will happen now.

Sometimes the answer isn’t to try harder.

We can become so used to pushing through — overriding tiredness, stress and the signs that we’ve had enough — that stopping can begin to feel like failure.

But perhaps reaching our limit doesn’t always mean we need to find a way through it.

Sometimes we need to stop there for a while.

To rest. To regroup. To let ourselves be supported rather than asking even more of ourselves.

The wall doesn’t have to be something we crash into.

Perhaps, sometimes, it can simply be somewhere to lean. 🤍

Sometimes the intensity of a reaction doesn’t seem to match what’s happening in the moment.

A look, a tone of voice, a smell, a place — even a particular feeling — can stir something much older.

Trauma memories aren’t always experienced as clear memories. Sometimes they return as fear, shame, physical sensations or a powerful sense that something is wrong. Your mind may know you’re in the present, while your body is responding to something it recognises from the past.

Understanding this can create a little more space around the reaction.

This feeling is familiar.
This reaction makes sense.
But this moment is not that moment.

The past doesn’t have to disappear for it to begin to feel like the past.

Some changes are chosen. Others arrive before we’re ready.

Grief and hope can exist alongside each other. We can honour what we’ve lost, while slowly beginning to notice what life might hold next.

One doesn’t diminish the other. 🍂

The patterns we carry into adulthood often make more sense when we understand where they began.

What once helped us feel safe, connected or accepted may no longer be serving us now.

Understanding the pattern can be the beginning of changing it. 💜

Why do I feel like this when nothing is obviously wrong?

You might be functioning, working, getting things done and looking after everyone else — yet still find yourself overthinking, becoming overwhelmed by relatively small things, struggling to relax or wondering why you don’t feel better.

Sometimes what we’re experiencing now begins to make more sense when we understand what our mind and nervous system may have learned from what we’ve experienced before.

I’ve created a new free guide exploring exactly this.

Why Do I Feel Like This?
A guide to understanding anxiety, overwhelm and why your nervous system can struggle to switch off.

Do you ever feel unwanted, even when nobody has actually rejected you?

A change in tone. A message unanswered. Someone seeming slightly distant. And suddenly you’re wondering if you’ve done something wrong.

Sometimes that feeling belongs as much to the past as it does to the present.

When connection hasn’t always felt secure, you may learn to watch closely for signs of rejection — and to adapt yourself to avoid it.

But someone else’s response doesn’t determine your worth.

You don’t have to earn your right to belong. 💜

Do you ever find yourself expecting something to go wrong… even when everything seems fine?

Someone takes a little longer than usual to reply and you start wondering what’s happened. You notice the smallest change in someone’s tone. You hear a noise at night and you’re listening before you’ve even consciously decided to.

Sometimes this isn’t simply overthinking or being an anxious person. It can be hypervigilance — a nervous system that has learned, through trauma or unpredictability, that it’s safer to notice potential danger early than risk being caught off guard.

And hypervigilance doesn’t always look like fear. It can look like being perceptive, prepared, good at reading people and always one step ahead.

My latest blog explores why hypervigilance can develop after trauma, how scanning and checking can unintentionally keep the pattern going, and what can help the nervous system gradually learn that it doesn’t always need to stay on guard.
